Hello everyone! My name is Daniel, and I am excited to share my final report for the WP Credits course. During this project, I decided to contribute as a Polyglot, helping with translations inside the WordPress community.

This report summarizes my experience throughout the course, the challenges I faced, the resources that helped me learn, and the skills I developed while contributing to WordPress translations.

Teams and Projects I Participated In

During the WP Credits course, I contributed to the WordPress Polyglots team. My work focused on translating strings for WordPress plugins in order to improve accessibility for Spanish-speaking users.

At the beginning, I started working on plugins with only a few untranslated strings. This allowed me to better understand how the translation system works and helped me adapt to the workflow gradually. Later, I began contributing to larger projects with many untranslated strings, which helped me gain more confidence and experience within the community.

Learning Resources

To learn how WordPress translations work, I mainly used the official Polyglots handbook and translation documentation provided by WordPress.

Additionally, my WP Credits mentor helped me whenever I got stuck or had questions about the contribution process. Their guidance was very important during my first contributions and helped me understand how to properly suggest translations and participate in the community.

Challenges and Solutions

One of the first challenges I faced was not fully understanding how the translation system worked at the beginning. Since everything was new to me, I needed time to understand how to suggest translations correctly and how the review process functioned.
I solved this challenge by reading the Polyglots handbook carefully and asking my mentor for help whenever I had doubts. Thanks to this support, I was able to adapt quickly and begin contributing more confidently.

Another challenge was that translation reviews sometimes took a long time. After suggesting translations, I had to wait until someone reviewed and approved them.
To solve this issue, my mentor introduced me to the Spanish WordPress Slack community, where contributors can notify reviewers when translations are ready to be checked. This helped speed up the review process and also allowed me to feel more connected to the WordPress community.

Key Lessons from the WP Credits Course

The WP Credits course taught me the importance of collaboration in open-source communities. I learned how WordPress contributors work together to improve the platform and make it accessible to users from different countries and languages.

Through this experience, I developed both technical and soft skills.

Personal Reflections and Next Steps

Contributing to WordPress as a Polyglot has been a very interesting and team experience. One of the things I enjoyed most was learning how a global open-source community works and seeing how even small contributions can help many users.

In the future, I would like to continue contributing to WordPress translations and improve my participation within the Polyglots community.
